What is Autodesk SketchBook good for?
CONS: The software comes with numerous templates and standard sketches to choose from. A lot of these templates are stock illustrations that are very generic and thus limit the kind of creativity that I can exhibit on a daily basis. That’s what I like about other sketching tools. They let me express myself freely- my creativity can be used to more purposeful results, for instance, to pitch my product ideas instead of drawing random things that are quite pointless.
It’s a great way to quickly capture and share user interface designs, concept art and wireframes. It’s great for any kind of vector art. If you like the look and feel of ArtBits, it’s definitely worth checking out. You can export your designs in several formats including.SketchBook Pro format.
“SketchBook is not being retired. We will continue to develop SketchBook and SketchBook for Enterprise with a focus on adding functionality to enable designers, architects, and animators to capture conceptual art and designs. While not all functionality will end up in both SketchBook and SketchBook for Enterprise, you will continue to enjoy the robust capabilities of SketchBook and benefit from ongoing enhancements, free of charge.”
A solution to the problem is Autodesk SketchBook Pro, a professional drawing application designed for the serious artist or technical illustrator. Having used SketchBook in the past, one of its best features is the lack of ‘frills’. This allows you to get up-to-speed, quickly.
Depending on your needs you can use SketchBook as a free version, a pro version and a mobile version. It’s available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Autodesk also includes several drawing and painting modes, in addition to the basic “what you draw is what you get” default. You can enable Steady Stroke which gently “drags” the tool tip in order to smooth out you lines, or Predictive Stroke which attempts to fix your mistakes after you’ve drawn them. Both of these tools make freehand drawing with a mouse or trackpad a more predictable experience.
CONS: I can’t say that I’m a novice when it comes to drawing and design, but Sketchbook made me feel frustrated about these skills at the start. I had a hard time understanding and perfecting my strokes. It’s not easy to import and export media files here as well. But as with anything, I got to know this program in time, and I now know its environment like the back of my hand.

Main benefits of Autodesk SketchBook
The features of SketchBook Pro that makes it so excellent for this are the layers, symbols, backgrounds, raster layers, and direct view. These form the basis of all my sketchnotes. Although the whole structure of layers in SketchBook is actually quite simple, its easy to organize the different types of layers that I use in different ways and I make a point of not messing that up (which is not always easy!). For example, I can drag-n-drop my text layer into my background layers and use symbols to place my other layers, such as a layer with images, which is pushed below my grid and then I can move my grid back into the foreground. I can also manage where my text can be placed. I can draw on a layer, then move it or layers beneath it elsewhere, and its as simple as I can get. I have even been able to connect layers together as layers nest to enable very complicated structures. It really is a spectacular tool for designing my presentations.
[16:01] Sacha Chua: At its highest level, Autodesk SketchBook is a complete digital sketchbook application. Its main feature, which Dave Gray was using the other day to sketchnote his presentation, is at the lowest level, which is the zooming, rotation, and navigation of a horizontal page. You can pan and zoom as you would work on paper. Its main focus right now is on sketching, and basic content creation. If we think about the future of sketchnoting, I think we are going to want something that is layered on top of that zooming and navigation feature. So, Im going to ask you guys about it, if you have any thoughts on that.
[18:29] Mike Rohde: So, if I were trying to organize my sketchbook and my hand drawn sketches, I would probably be a little more organized.
